Anger

Anger Counselling and Therapy

Anger is a natural, though sometimes unwanted or irrational, emotion that everybody experiences from time to time. Anger itself isn’t necessarily a problem and can be healthy when it not only alerts us to issues that we may need to change in our lives, but also motivates us to make these changes.

However, anger that is not handled in a healthy way can be uncomfortable and damaging to your health and personal life. It can also be destructive to relationships. Anger becomes a problem when it regularly interferes with your life, work, or relationships. This may include persistent feelings of frustration toward yourself or others, an inability to enjoy life or the company of others, and a hot temper or tendency to yell or argue with others.

When you experience unmanaged anger regularly or for long periods of time, the constant flood of stress chemicals and associated metabolic changes can eventually cause harm to many different systems of the body. This can lead to physical problems such as:

  • Headache
  • Digestion problems, such as abdominal pain
  • Insomnia
  • Increased anxiety
  • Depression
  • High blood pressure
  • Skin problems, such as eczema
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

LCC Provides Anger Counselling

Your LCC therapist will help you find healthier ways to manage your anger, using research-backed techniques such as progressive relaxation, cognitive therapy, and skill development.

Your therapist will:

  • Help you recognize what makes you angry (triggers or catalysts for anger) and get you to ask yourself questions about your anger such as “What type of people or situations make me angry?”, “What do I do when I am angry?”, and “How does my anger affect others around me?”
  • Teach you how to best respond to these triggers without being aggressive.
  • Enable you to learn specific skills to help you manage triggers for anger effectively.
  • Help you identify times when your thoughts do not lead to logical or rational conclusions.
  • Work with you to change how you think and react to certain situations.
  • Teach you how to relax, how to stay calm and be peaceful when you feel a surge of anger
  • Help you learn how to be assertive – by being able to express yourself assertively, you will feel more in control of situations. Assertiveness should never be confused with aggression.
  • Help you learn some problem-solving techniques. Solving problems can make you feel empowered and will reduce the risk of triggering anger or frustration.

Your counsellor and therapist will support you as you develop and strive towards your goals for change. In time, you can learn to relate differently to your emotions of anger, achieving a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle that is not controlled by unwanted behaviours.
