Imagine this: You have a deadline, a to-do list, and every intention of being productive… but you end up doing nothing. The dishes stare at you. Your inbox fills up. The shame sets in.
Does this sound familiar? This is what many people refer to as ADHD paralysis—and it is something we help clients with every day at Lifecare Centres.
What Is ADHD Paralysis?
It is a state of mental and emotional shutdown where:
- You freeze in the face of too many tasks
- Small decisions feel impossible
- Your brain avoids things that feel “too hard”
This often leads to procrastination.
Symptoms of Forgetfulness & Procrastination
- Forgetting appointments, tasks, or even conversations
- Putting off tasks until the last second (or never starting)
- Feeling guilt and shame for “not being better at life”
Why It Happens
ADHD impacts executive function—the brain’s ability to plan, organize, and act. Stress, trauma, and shame only make it worse.
What You Can Do
People often interpret symptoms of ADHD paralysis as laziness. Self-condemnation and negative self-talk can start to become a normal part of someone’s thought life. “I should be able to do better than this.” “It wasn’t that hard of a task. So why did it take so long?” “I’m just lazy, that’s why I didn’t get it done on time.” Yet, the procrastination and forgetfulness that comes along with ADHD paralysis isn’t a symptom of laziness. It’s a signal that your brain has become overwhelmed and you may need to try putting some different strategies in place to begin thriving.
Strategies you can try:
- Break tasks into very small, achievable chunks
- Use visual reminders or body-doubling (doing tasks with someone else)
- Be kind to yourself; self-compassion helps more than self-criticism
