If your child is struggling in school, you’re not alone—and you’re not without options. Whether the challenge is reading, math, focus, or behaviour, a psychoeducational assessment can provide the clarity and support needed to help your child thrive.
At LifeCare Centres, we provide comprehensive psychoeducational assessments designed to uncover a student’s strengths, identify areas of need, and guide families and educators with tailored recommendations.
What Is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a formal and comprehensive evaluation that helps us better understand how a student learns. It looks closely at their cognitive abilities, academic skills, and emotional or attentional functioning to determine how best to support their development.
We often use these assessments to answer questions like:
- Does the student have a learning disability (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia)?
- Are attentional difficulties, like ADHD, impacting learning?
- Is the student gifted or underchallenged in their current academic setting?
- What are their cognitive strengths and learning needs?
- What accommodations or modifications might help them succeed in the classroom?
What Does the Process Involve?
Our assessment process is detailed and supportive, typically completed over 6–8 weeks and involving several steps:
- Initial Consultation & Paperwork – We begin with a virtual meeting and gather important background information through interviews and questionnaires.
- Testing Sessions – Conducted in person by a trained psychometrist over two to four sessions. These evaluate memory, intelligence, reading, writing, math, visual-motor skills, attention, and more.
- Autism Testing (if applicable) – In addition to the standard assessment of cognitive and memory abilities, specialized tools and questionnaires are used to assess for autism spectrum behaviours and sensitivities.
- Data Analysis – Our team integrates test results with observations and developmental history to form a complete picture.
- Feedback Meeting – A psychologist meets with the family to explain results, answer questions, and provide practical recommendations.
- Comprehensive Report – Families receive a detailed document that includes findings, diagnoses (if applicable), and personalized educational strategies.
Why It Matters
Identifying learning differences or giftedness early on can have a profound impact on a child’s confidence, academic success, and emotional well-being. Our reports are especially helpful for advocating within the school system, including IPRC (Identification, Placement, and Review Committee) meetings, IEP (Individual Education Plan) development, and ongoing support across
all grade levels.
We encourage families to share these results with schools so that students receive the support they need—both now and in the years ahead.
If you’re concerned about your child’s academic performance, attention, or emotional well-being, a psychoeducational assessment can be a meaningful first step toward clarity and support.
